It’s stories like this that make a Counting Crows concert special, Duritz essentially treating the proceedings like an MTV Storytellers show. That early kinship with Robertson led, remarkably, to the then-relatively-unknown Counting Crows filling in for Van Morrison at the 1993 Rock Hall inductions, where they played “Caravan” in place of Morrison, who sat out his own induction ceremony. Before “If I Could Give All My Love -or- Richard Manuel Is Dead,” Duritz recalled his experience with the late Robbie Robertson of The Band.īack when the Crows only had a demo tape to their name and were quickly becoming the talk of music executives breathlessly searching for The Next Big Thing, Duritz and the band sought wisdom from Robertson, who encouraged them to record their albums at home rather than in a studio - which Duritz said they did, and have done ever since (except for studio overdubs). The only notable singles that weren’t played by the band were “Accidentally In Love,” Counting Crows’ hit from the Shrek 2 soundtrack that isn’t a song the band regularly plays on this tour, and their cover of Joni Mitchell‘s “Big Yellow Taxi.” Instead, Duritz and his colleagues dug deep for several of the songs that have helped them stand out from their ’90s alt/rock peers and amass a reputation as an electrifying live band.ĭuritz used the stage as his personal soapbox to recount several stories from the band’s career. Instead, this was a set built on classic Crows material - hits from their 1993 breakout August and Everything After and beyond. It proved a tone-perfect warmup for Duritz and his fellow Counting Crows, who didn’t bother playing any of their newer material.
